The Junior Team of the Year title was won by the Rotherham Harriers Under 17 Women's Cross Country Team, for their team win this year at the National Cross Country Championships - the second year running that they have won the national title.

The coaches and volunteers who work so hard behind the scenes to make everything happen also had their moment in the limelight, as the most successful were thanked for their efforts. City of Sheffield Athletics Club coach Rob Creasey, and Dearneside Athletics Club coach Trevor Fox, were joint winners in the Coach of the Year category for their work with young athletes and local communities - Rob coaching middle distance running and up and coming track star Abdi Ahmed, and Trevor coaching Pole Vault, and local international athlete Luke Cutts.

Long serving coach, founder and lynchpin of Wombwell and Dearne Amateur Boxing Club Eric Walker, was also recognised for his efforts, winning the Lifetime Achievement Award on the night. Eric works with many young people in the Dearne Valley area to help them get started and progress in boxing and has also coached many successful boxers, representing Yorkshire and the country.

Meanwhile, up and coming coaches and volunteers were also thanked and encouraged in their work, with Vicky Greensil from Sheffield's Concord Netball Club scooping the Young Coach of the Year award for her work both with the netball club and coaching dance, athletics, gymnastics and rounders. Mark Tingle from Barnsley College took the Young Volunteer of the Year title, for his volunteering both with Rugby and with local schoolchildren through the Youth Sport Trust's 2012 project, encouraging more children to get into sport.

With two new categories this year, Business Contribution to Sport and Contribution to Disability Sport, community sport for all ages and abilities shone through. Raleys Solicitors took the Business Contribution to Sport prize, for their sponsorship and investment into Barnsley Football Club's Toby's Terriers project - a scheme which allows hundreds of school children to access quality sports coaching both in and after school.

Joan and Geoffrey Roberts were the shining lights of disability sport in South Yorkshire, and were recognised for their hard work and efforts with the Barnsley Inclusive Fitness Sport and Physical Activity Forum. Joan and Geoffrey have been instrumental in helping the forum secure a hoist for the pool at the Metrodome Leisure Centre, Barnsley, and give up their time tirelessly to promote disability sport and encourage help more disabled people to access sporting opportunities.

'The South Yorkshire Sport and re:play awards showcase the best of sport in South Yorkshire, both at a local community level, encouraging more people to become involved, through to international performers and stars of the future. South Yorkshire has a strong sporting tradition, and this is evident in the high quality of athletes, coaches and volunteers that we have here tonight. We want to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate all those short listed tonight, for their hard work, determination and success over the past year' said Bruce Kelsey, Partnership Director at South Yorkshire Sport.

Trevor works at Dearneside School, and helps a lot of children at the school access athletics, in particular the Pole Vault event. Trevor takes the children four times a week in a minibus after school to training locations throughout South Yorkshire, to enable them to train at Pole Vault, and also takes the youngsters to competitions in the minibus at the weekends.

Trevor has more nationally ranked athletes than any other coach in the region, with all his athletes coming out of Dearneside school. Trevor helps the youngsters beyond just coaching - without Trevor encouraging them to take part in the Pole Vault many of them would be at risk of anti-social behaviour

Trevor has given up his own time to coach more youngsters to an elite level than any other athletics coach in the area, including Luke Cutts, who now competes in pole vault at an international level.

Rob Creasey, City of Sheffield Athletics Club
Rob has worked unselfishly with Sheffield's Somalian community, its leaders and youngsters to establish a group of amazing talent based at Don Valley Stadium. Rob's work has paid off this year with two of his squad becoming international gold meddalists: Abdirisak Ahmed and Muktar Mohammed. Rob has overcome the language barriers by learning the language and basing himself in schools at the heart of the Somalian community, gaining trust and many friends along the way. Rob is sympathetic to the needs of his athletes, from providing tents for them to pray at competitions to organising their training around religious festivals - things that not many athletics coaches would ever consider.

As well as the two athletes that have achieved so much, he has a further group of 15 - 20 youngsters that will with no doubt be at the same level within the next couple of years.
